See What I Hear: A Lesson in Photography
Lesson’s Purpose
Taking pictures of family, friends, and special places is a rewarding activity for most
students. However, it is often assumed that students who are blind and visually impaired
do not have the ability to take quality photos or would not find the activity equally
rewarding as their sighted peers. This lesson teaches students who are blind and visually
impaired how to use cameras and present their work in PowerPoint presentations.
Time Required
This project takes several two-hour sessions, indoors and outdoors. One session may be
devoted to learning how to use the cameras. Another may be dedicated to the walking
tour and picture taking. Depending on your students’ knowledge of PowerPoint, you may
need a full session to teach them how to use this program. One or two sessions may be
needed to view, select, and insert photos into a presentation. In a follow-up session, give
students the opportunity to practice and deliver their presentations.
