Sony understands that security is one of the top concerns as today’s businesses
become increasingly more mobile. Every day, representatives from companies
around the world take their laptops and notebooks containing confi dential
company information on the road. Every trip represents a signifi cant risk to
sensitive data and intellectual property.
Replacing a laptop costs a relatively modest amount of money, but the cost of
compromising or revealing sensitive data on that laptop can be signifi cant. In
addition, a stolen laptop may grant access to a company’s internal network or
virtual private network.
A report by the SANS Institute, a well-known source for information security
training and certifi cation, states that 80 percent of stolen laptops are taken for
the information they contain and not for the hardware itself1. And, according
to an FBI/CSI survey, laptop theft is the third most prevalent computer crime,
following virus related offenses and insider abuse of networks, resulting in a
fi nancial loss of $130,104,542 in 2005 alone2. Only a small percentage of that
