INTRODUCTION TO SCRIPTING
Scripts have been an integral part of the UNIX operating system. For years, UNIX administrators
and engineers have enjoyed the privilege to automate and administer local
and remote UNIX systems by writing simple readable scripts.
Microsoft operating systems also provided scripting support in the form of batch
files. Although batch files are a good start, large batch files can be difficult to write and
debug. Moreover, batch scripts cannot make use of technologies such as the Microsoft’s
ActiveX components (ActiveX components are covered later in this book). Therefore,
an administrator had to use utilities such as the isMember.exe resource kit utility or the
Reg.exe utility or write custom programs (to take advantage of the ActiveX objects
