Q: My scooter is slow. What can I do to
speed it up?
A: First of all, is it running correctly? A
1950s scooter will usually top out around
40mph. Vespa 50s go around 30mph. 90s
go about 40. Most 1960s-80s 125s will do
about 45. 150s should go 50-55, depending
on age. 160-180s are around 55-60, and
200s generally go 60-65. If your scooter is
slower than this or has poor pickup, you
may just need to bring your scooter up to
snuff.
If your scooter is as quick as it should be but
you have the “need for velocity”, there are
some performance parts you can change
which will pep it up. Here’s the thing
though: no one upgrade is going to vastly
improve your performance. Adding a freeflow
exhaust will make some difference, a
high-compression cylinder kit will give you a
bit more, and a bigger carb may make the
motor breathe easier, but these things done
together in a balanced way will make a huge
difference. The key is to doing it in a way
that will keep your scooter relatively
