Flash
Dr. Harold Edgerton’s invention of the electronic flash is what
brought color to the underwater world of photography. These
electronic marvels take a low voltage battery source, boost it
up to a very high voltage, and then discharge it through a
Xeon gas when the camera shutter is depressed. The result
is a very bright light source of a very short duration that has
the same color balance as the sun. Electronic flash units
come in all sizes, beam angles, power output, and with varying
power sources.
In previous underwater photography books, readers
were presented with pages and pages of charts with flash
guide numbers, beam angles, and methods for calculating
exposures. It was not uncommon to see underwater flash
units plastered with custom labels showing the difference
combinations of distance, ISO speeds, and f/stops….
