1 Introduction
Okay, so we have established the fact that you want to make a Real-Time
Strategy (RTS) game. Real-time strategy games are as close as most of us
will ever get to assuming the role of a military commander. In RTS games,
the player must form and carry out long-term strategies, just like in a game of
chess. However, in RTS games, the player must also be able to quickly adapt his
strategies to a very dynamic environment. The player does not always have a perfect
picture of what is happening in the game world (unlike in a game of chess).
Therefore, a plan that seemed sound a minute ago might have to be planned anew,
or even scraped totally. Maybe it is just this that makes RTS games so complex and
fun to play. However, in this book we will try to do something even more fun than
just playing a real-time strategy game-we will make one. Throughout this book,
we will build our own real-time strategy game from the ground up. Each chapter in
this book works like a tutorial covering one or more of the components…
