Mind-Body Fitness

Across Canada and in fitness centres around the world, mind-body fitness has become a program staple. Initially many instructors and program directors were concerned that the upspring in Pilates, yoga, and other mind-body programs would fizzle out and become yet another fitness fad. Not so. Mind-body programming is stronger than ever and it has continued to grow and evolve. Today, mind-body encompasses many disciplines including but not limited to yoga, Pilates, meditation, Tai Chi, Fusion, Nia?and much more. Regardless of whether you are currently participating in or instructing a particular discipline yourself, you will be influenced in some form by this exciting evolution.
The IDEA Mind-Body Fitness Committee’s definition of mind-body exercise is “physical activity executed with a focused, internally directed mind-set and/or meditative component” (IDEA Today, April 1997). With such a broad definition, it may appear difficult to pinpoint what truly constitutes a mind-body class. To help answer the question, well-known fitness professionals Marjorie O’Connor and Helen Vanderburg have provided their personal insight.
