WHAT SPREADSHEETS ARE
A spreadsheet is the computer equivalent of a paper ledger sheet that consists of a
grid made from columns and rows that intersects to form cells. Spreadsheets make
integrating, organizing, analyzing, and communicating data much easier and quicker
than doing it manually.
Spreadsheets allow you to enter, calculate, manipulate, and analyze data such as
numbers and text. However, spreadsheets are best used to calculate values. For
instance, Organization A might collect money for a charity. Using a spreadsheet, you
can calculate the total amount collected by the organization and by each person using a
spreadsheet. Below is an example of what a blank spreadsheet (Figure 1) looks like in
Microsoft Excel.
