Before you begin:
If your machine is managed by a Carnegie Mellon departmental administrator, please check with that person before proceeding. Also, make sure you have admin access to the machine you want to secure and login using the admin account for all actions unless otherwise noted.

Viruses, worms, trojans and break-ins are fairly commonplace and can wreak havoc on your computer’s programs, operating system or data. Protect your machine following the steps in this document. For more information on these terms, see Securing Your Machine: Definitions.
