Windows XP Administrator Access Guidelines
What is Administrator Access?
This is a set of file and registry permissions that allows the user to add or delete all files and registry
entries on the machine, including data files, application files and system files necessary for the PC to
function properly. It allows the user to change any OS system setting including new hardware drivers and
printers. It allows users to bypass protections and safeguards that User rights provide, such as virus
protection, protection of critical system files, and user data protections. An alternative to administrative
access is to have UMR IT install applications, printers, and any other new hardware. This can usually be
done through the remote desktop features of Windows XP, which doesn’t require a scheduled visit.
What won’t administrator access allow?
?Administrator access won’t allow a user to install any application that requires the user to be
logged in as the user account “administrator”. Examples are Corel WordPerfect (all versions) and
many other applications.
