Comparative Analysis of
Web Design Patterns & Pattern Collections

The goal of this comparative analysis is to understand current approaches to organizing
and displaying a user interface pattern collection and to understand if there are any
emerging standards in the way patterns are displayed or written. Additionally, we
wanted to determine if there are similar or different patterns across collections.
We thank Mano Marks, David Hong and Owen Otto for their contributions to this analysis.
We particularly thank our advisor and Director of Center for Document Engineering, Bob

Executive Summary
This analysis was conducted by graduate students in the School of Information at UC
Berkeley as part of a larger project to build a web design pattern library for campus web
designers and developers.
