2000 VOLKSWAGEN NEW BEETLE GLX
Introduced in the spring of 1998, the popular New Beetle just keeps getting better. This year’s
version has an anti-theft system. The top-of-the-line GLX comes with a turbocharged engine,
leather seats and other amenities.
Interior and trunk
The front doors open nearly 90 degrees, a Volkswagen trademark, making it easy to get in and
out of the front seats. Typical, too, are the firm seats so appreciated (by almost everyone) on long
trips. A lever adjustment raises the seat very precisely, and a rotary knob lets you angle the seat
back just so. It would be nice to be able to adjust the cushion angle, too, to enhance the driving
position and seating comfort.
One surprise in this car is the deep dashboard, which seems to stretch forever to the base of the
windshield. And, of course, in a nod to the Flower Power era, there’s the celebrated bud vase.
To ease access to the rear, both front seats jump forward and out of the way, which is rare
nowadays, then return to their original position. The rear bench seats two but in barely adequate
