Abstract
The aim of the present study was to determine the relationships between smoking habit
and subgingival dental calculus, and between subgingival dental calculus and alveolar
bone height. The study group included 239 individuals 22 to 69 years of age, 19.4 %
smokers, 23 % former smokers, and 49.8 % non-smokers. The study was based on
radiographs, where subgingival dental calculus of mesial and distal surfaces of each
tooth excluding third molars was registered. The sum total of all mesial and distal
calculus deposits was divided by all surfaces at risk within the individual. This formed
the radiographic subgingival calculus index (RSCI) of the individual The mean RSCI
across all individuals was 0.027. The RSCI was significantly greater for smokers when
compared to non-smokers, and former smokers (p <0.05). The relationship between
periodontal bone height and number of sites with subgingival calculus indicated a
statistically significant reduction of mean periodontal bone height in individuals with
subgingival calculus
