HOW TO STUDY CALCULUS
You are about to embark on a great intellectual adventure: the study of calculus. Calculus is the
mathematical language of change, and is the language in which our knowledge of the natural world
is described. Nothing this worthwhile comes easy, and you will have to work steadily throughout
the semester to be successful. Here are a few suggestions that might help.
1. Attend class regularly. Some class material will be available on the class website, but much
will not, including anything useful that turns up in class discussions.
2. Do all the homework. A general rule to follow for any math class (and almost any other
class, I would expect) is that for each hour spent in class, you should spend at least 2 hours
out of class.
3. Contribute to class discussions. Read the textbook before class, so that you are ready to
contribute. Bring homework problems to class and ask about them. Never feel embarrassed
to ask a question. There are no stupid questions, only stupid answers, and you
can let me worry about the answers.
