Course Description: This course will be an introduction to the theory of numbers. We will study a
variety of problems related to the fundamental ideas of divisibility, prime factorization and congruence.
Along the way, we will look at some famous theorems and unresolved conjectures in number theory.
This course will serve as an introduction to the art of constructing, reading and writing rigorous proofs.
Thus in addition to studying mathematical results, we also focus our attention on logic, implications,
definitions and different methods of proof.
Course Structure: Your responsibilities for this course are: one in-class midterm exam, one take-home
exam, five problem sets (see below) and the final exam. The dates for these are indicated on the attached
course calendar except for the final exam which is as scheduled by the registrar.
Grades: I will determine final course grades by curving your total scores, out of a possible 650 points,
