Robert McNeel and Associates’ AccuRender is a third-party rendering application which runs inside of
AutoCAD, Revit, and Rhino (via Flamingo technology). It uses a dialog box interface to apply materials,
set lighting, and render models without having to export the model to separate program, or force a user
to learn a new interface for viewing and modifying the model. It is generally designed for architects and
interior designers, although because of it’s sophisticated rendering engine, plant generator, and materials
editor, it also appeals to landscape designers, industrial designers, and lighting engineers.
One of the biggest reasons for AccuRender’s popularity is its simple interface to a clever radiosity
rendering engine. Radiosity, unlike traditional computer rendering techniques such as raytracing and
phong shading, calculates and displays the effect of indirect lighting in a model. These indirect lighting
effects result from the interaction between lights and the materials on a model’s objects. Although
usually subtle, radiosity effects can add realism by representing light more accurately.
