section nine.a Working with Materials
A material describes how an object interacts with light. Material properties work hand in hand with light
properties - rendering combines the two to simulate how the object would look in a real-world setting.
You assign materials to individual objects, or selection sets such as layers or blocks; a single scene can
contain many different materials.
The only material information that is stored in a drawing is which materials are applied in the scene, and
how they are scaled. The actual material definitions are not stored in the AutoCAD drawing, they are
outside of the drawing in material libraries, which are collections of saved materials. AccuRender
allows multiple libraries, which can be viewed, edited, and organized, with the Material Library dialog
box. Each library is actually a separate file. In a networked office environment, these library files are
typically stored in a shared common directory so that each user has access to the same updated materials.
