If you stop and think about it, infrastructure design is built on data-perhaps more so than any
other design discipline. From field survey data to structural information about any pre-existing
elements, as the engineer adds elements to an infrastructure project he or she effectively builds
an engineering model from data that represents the entire design.
In support of this Engineering Model, Autodesk?Civil?3D 2007’s object-oriented software
architecture defines each point, surface, alignment, grading, section, profile, and corridor model
as an intelligent object that includes an interdependent relationship with other objects in the
model. Various drawing elements that are related can be dynamically linked together so that a
change to any one layer will propagate throughout the model. If base data such as survey
observations and figures are updated, resultant points, surfaces, profiles, grading plans, road
models, pipe networks, reports, tables, and finished drafting are all updated (see Figure 1).Figure 1. Dynamically linked object data ensures that changes to one layer are reflected
throughout the model.
Autodesk Civil 3D 2007 features and functions help users take advantage of the Engineering
Model to explore conceptual proposals and complete final designs faster, and provide better
service and value to clients. Here are some tips and tricks that take advantage of these new
software features.
Production drafting
Perhaps the biggest benefits from Autodesk Civil 3D 2007 come from new tools that streamline
many time-consuming, manual - and often error-prone - drafting and annotation methods used in
typical engineering workflows. For example, you can derive labels and annotation directly from
the Engineering Model, significantly reducing the time typically spent making, updating - and all
too often correcting - this vital aspect of your drawings.

Tap the wealth of data that is collected in the course of your project and use it to annotate your
drawings. Many times in a typical civil engineering project there are instances where a label
needs to contain information from multiple types of engineering elements. Traditional CAD
systems require building a label by hand to include all the appropriate data and this effort can…
