Moving from 2D to 3D in AutoCAD 2007
As companies switch to 3D drawings in AutoCAD?software, they want to know how to convert existing 2D drawings to 3D. While sometimes it may be quicker and easier to start from scratch, many 2D drawings can be converted to 3D if you know which commands and techniques to use. This article explains those tools and shows you how to convert a simple mechanical drawing from 2D to 3D.
The drawing used in this article is a sample drawing; the default location is C:Program FilesAutoCAD 2007SampleSheet SetsManufacturingVW252-02-1000.dwg. The drawing you see here is slightly simplified. The layout includes dimensions so you can try it out on your own.
If you create drawings like this in 2D, you have to draw the same object three times. Also, the auxiliary, isometric view, which is a 2D drawing made up of lines, arcs, and ellipses, can be especially difficult to draw accurately. When you draw in 3D, you draw it once and can then view it from any angle.
