When Brentwood, California, began to
focus on economic development in the
early 1990s, the City’s population was
less than 10,000. In the subsequent 10+
years, the City has been one of
California’s fastest growing cities and
has seen its population quadruple to
more than 38,000. In just the past three
years, the City’s population has more
than doubled and the growth continues.
Brentwood is expected to be the home
of more than 50,000 citizens by the end
of 2005. The City’s high quality labor
pool, affordable housing, commercial
space, rolling green hills and small town
community ambiance, keeps attracting
more people. This dramatic growth rate
makes constant change a way of life and
places a large burden on the City’s infrastructure.
The Challenges of Change
One of the biggest challenges to growth
lies in the City’s ability to keep up with
demand for public services. Everything
from garbage, to water and sewer, to
police, to permit services must serve a
larger constituency every day. As a
result, the future growth of Brentwood
hinges on its ability to leverage technology
that automates administrative tasks,
and helps to streamline processes,
speed customer service and reduce
costs.
