“Consistent framework.” That’s what
Mark Ledbetter, director of geographic
information systems (GIS) and application
development for the city of
Scottsdale, Ariz., thinks is most unique
about the city’s Autodesk MapGuide?
GIS.
That may not mean a lot to a visitor who
wants to take in the local flavor and
attractions in Scottsdale, but to a city
administrator trying to cut the amount of
paperwork in the field, it means quite a
bit. As any city manager probably knows,
dealing with paperwork can be time-consuming,
inaccurate, as well as a waste of
resources and precious capital.
Take the paper-based process the city
employed in marking its underground
water and sewer lines. Because such
activity is pivotal for a variety of municipal
and economic development operations,
Scottsdale attempted to respond to all
request within 48 hours. But the city
receives as many as 55,000 requests per
year, or the equivalent of 100-200 per
day.
In fact, until relatively recently, field crews
had to report to a central office and manually
sort out daily requests referred to in
Scottsdale lingo as “tickets.” Part of the
job was to weed out tickets that would
have no impact…
