I. Introduction
Visually, Arden: The World of William Shakespeare is an amalgam of historical accuracy
and stagecraft. It is meant to not only place players in a world based on realistic reproductions,
but to also lure them into a highly dramatic and colorful “dreamscape”. Every facet of the
game should have its own personality, right down to the very trees that make up the forests of
Arden. Each city will have its own flavor and design that will make it instantly recognizable to
the player even if he or she is not using a map. As of early 2007, this project is still an
academic-oriented endeavor, which is fortunate in the sense that public expectations of the art
department will likely be low. Rather than fulfill these low expectations, the goal should be to
surpass them by a landslide. The goal should be to make the game look just as good as any
other commercially available MMORPG sitting on store shelves right now.
The purpose of this guide is to provide you, the art director, (or someone in a job of
similar capacity) a roadmap for producing artwork for Arden. The guide will cover technical
