THIS IS THE FIRST YEAR for the second-generation
RAV4, built on a larger platform than its predecessor and
with an all-new engine.
Valve adjustment is “as required” and accomplished by
replacing lifters. The returnless fuel system has a pressure
regulator built into the fuel pump assembly in the tank.
The housing for the center differential on all-wheel drive
(AWD) models with an automatic transmission is part of
the transaxle case, but
it has its own oil supply.
Driveshaft service
consists of joint lubrication
and checking
the nut/bolt torque.
All models come
with antilock brakes
(ABS), so there’s no
proportioning valve in
the brake system, but
a service bulletin describes revised front brake pads and
rear drums that were developed to address noise problems.
Other bulletins were issued to address malfunction
indicator lamp (MIL) illumination with diagnostic trouble
code (DTC) P1349 (camshaft timing actuator sprocket)
and DTC P0420 and P0430 (catalyst efficiency monitors
in the powertrain control module [PCM]).
Though the basic
platform is still in production,
this “trucklet”
was updated in 2004
with four-wheel disc
brakes, increased
engine bore and
