Bentley Survey on Consumers and Internet Security
Summary of Findings

Today, however, when an organization connects to the Internet, it immediately becomes vulnerable to attacks launched from any other computer with an Internet connection, anywhere across the globe. The threat to corporate, governmental and personal information has increased dramatically over the past few years as consumers have installed broadband Internet connections but have failed to install appropriate security protections. Because these Internet connections have a permanent Internet address and are “always on,” unsecured home computers can be used unknowingly as launching pads for attacks that cripple networks used by business and government entities. Given our dependence on the Internet, these attacks represent a new threat to both our economic and national security because they make key resources unavailable.
The National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace issued by the White House in September 2003 cited the need for home users and small businesses to protect their piece of cyberspace and prevent it from being used to attack others.
