using Canon EOS 1Ds Digital Camera System

The Hill Monastic Manuscript Library at St. John’s University has purchased equipment and
materials to digitally photograph the pages of rare manuscripts located in various places in the
Near and Middle East.
The operational manual describes the use of the various devices and tools used to accomplish
this.
Much of the information in last year’s user manual is still valid-this manual will concern itself
mostly with the operation of the Canon camera and its accompanying software.
Getting to Know the Canon EOS 1Ds
The camera HMML will be using for its manuscript project is the Canon EOS 1Ds, an 11-
megapixel single-lens-reflex camera of the latest type. As cameras go, the Canon is a very
sophisticated and complex photographic instrument. This user guide will only familiarize the user
with the functions and controls that relate directly to the manuscript digitization. The Canon’s
relevant controls can be easily manipulated from within the computer software known as “Remote
Capture.” The user wanting to learn more about the camera’s operation can refer to Canon’s own
manual for the camera.
