A mashup is the integration of publicly accessible data with privately owned data sources. Autodesk MapGuide® Enterprise software is a good tool for this type of data integration. Google Maps™ and Google Earth™ mapping service technology are examples of publically accessible data that is commonly used in mashup applications. Data from Google Maps and Google Earth can be enhanced with Autodesk MapGuide Enterprise as the business logic tier to the base map information.
Mashing up Autodesk MapGuide Enterprise with Google Maps or Google Earth provides a compelling way to visualize data in relation to the planet as a whole. In addition to satellite imagery, Google provides a large amount of useful content such as road networks, points of interest, voting districts, and so on. Google technology also provide geocoding and routing (directions) services. By serving up Autodesk MapGuide data via KML files, and its compressed form, KMZ, you can incorporate your specific data set with Google’s.
For example, if an Autodesk MapGuide data set contains information about underground pipes and sewers, this information can be overlaid on a satellite image showing individual streets and houses. This facilitates the process of estimating exactly which homes and streets would be affected by any maintenance required on those pipes.
