The mobile web server based on open source Apache implementation is available for mobile handsets with Symbian operating system. We have demonstrated applications using the mobile web server with python scripts to implement user location service. In the user interface we “mashup” the location information from the mobile server with Google Maps. This paper describes the system architecture and our experiences from using it. Location, map and route services are expected to become some of the most popular wireless data services in the future. An end-user may want to get information about his own location and/or the quickest path to a destination, or about a friend’s or family member’s location. Obvious user benefits in everyday navigation, fun and communication, and childcare can be achieved. Up-to-date location information is vital in emergency and rescue cases as well. In and emergency situations also the “last seen” information will be useful when trying to track the missing person. Several technologies can be used to derive the geographic coordinates from the received radio signals and low layer protocol information. GPS is optimized for delivering precise location information. Cellular or WLAN base station identifiers are in fixed locations and “accidentally” provide also location information for everyday applications that are not mission critical.
