Mapping Proposed School Closure Plans on the Isle of Wight
As well as “mashup hacks” where application such as Yahoo! Pipes are used to provide “transformational glue” that allows data from one online application to be consumed by another, sites that allow users to create their own “data fusion” content might be considered as mashups with the lowest possible barrier to entry.
As an example, consider how a citizen or citizen’s group can respond to a consultation document from the local council laying out three options for the future of schools within a particular local authority area, in this case, the Isle of Wight. During any public consultation of this sort, local government is obliged to make information public, but how that information is published is up to the publisher. In the case of the Isle of Wight schools’ restructuring public consultation document the plans were described using text, along with a series of tables providing examples of how schools might be affected under each of the three suggested options. No graphics or maps or other visual clues to help understand the potential ramifications of the proposed schools closures or mergers, although some maps were available on the councils education website.
