PSD is the formal extension for Photoshop files. These files can be opened by Photoshop, as well as many of Adobe’s other applications. If you are using Photoshop as part of a suite of applications (such as After Effects, Premiere, or Acrobat), you can keep your files in the native PSD format. If you are going to send Photoshop images to a printer or post them on the Internet, you need to save them in a different format such as TIFF (for print and video) or JPEG (for the web).
Resolution
One of the most important issues regarding digital images is resolution. So many people make the mistake of having too low of a resolution that the end product looks blocky or blurry. Resolution can be defined as the number of pixels per inch (ppi, or more commonly dpi for Dots Per Inch) printed on a page. A high-resolution image contains more, and therefore smaller, pixels than an image with a low resolution. The resulting image will be clearer and crisper. Most importantly, you cannot improve a lower quality image by just increasing its resolution, as this simply makes each pixel larger, which results in pixelation (output with large, blocky pixels). Working with video is slightly different in the sense that your output format is fixed. NTSC video uses images that are 720 pixels wide, and 486 pixels tall. High Definition Video uses a 1280×720 resolution.
