Unlike successful music games like Guitar Hero (Red Octane / Activision) or Rock Band (Harmonix Music Systems / MTV Games) which exist for game consoles, SplashPlay offers a comprehensive solution for tuition on real instruments. Users are not limited to a couple of pre-selected songs on proprietary game controllers, but can learn virtually any song they would like to play on real instruments. New chords for songs and tuition videos will be contributed by the community. Unlike many virtual instruments that exist for mobile phones, like Pocket Guitar (for iPhone), you can not only play songs, but record and share chord progressions, and download songs or video tutorials. These are shown in sync with chords on the virtual fretboard. SplashPlay further replaces chord finders that can be found on-line (like www.all-guitar-chords.com), and automatically displays the chord name as you play on the virtual guitar. Also, unlike MooCowMusic Band (for iPhone), SplashPlay is not limited to a specific style or song templates, but one can download any favourite music.

- Virtual guitar fretboard: The SplashPlay mobile application features a virtual guitar fretboard. The user can pluck individual strings, or set and play full chords. Chords are automatically analysed and chord names are displayed. The fretboard is currently optimized for use with single-touch screens.
- Enhance existing media: When songs, music videos or tuition videos are played back, the correct chords appear on the fretboard in sync with the music, provided that a corresponding chord progression file exists. Media files can be selected locally from the SD card, or downloaded from the SplashPlay server. The SplashPlay server allows videos to be added directly from 3rd party video hosting sites like YouTube. All media formats of the Android platform are supported, including Midi, mp3, and 3gp (video) formats.
- Share chord progressions: The virtual fretboard is used to record chord progressions to arbitrary music or video files. These can be stored locally, or uploaded to the SplashPlay server for sharing. Chord progressions on the server can be commented and rated by the community so that new users can easily find the “best” chord progression for a given song or video. All uploaded chord progressions are available through the server’s history function.
