Photo Tips for Farmers Tips for shooting the best photo for your web page
Short Description
In today’s fast-paced world, one great photograph can present as memorable an impression of your farm as a great many words. Customers are eager to see the face behind the food, and will often spend as much time studying the picture as the accompanying text. Some people spend their entire lives perfecting the art of portrait photography. But with a few pointers, it’s possible for anyone to take a compelling photograph to highlight your web page.

What kind of camera is best? The easiest photos for us to work with are those shot with a digital camera. They’re easy to ship. Just attach them to an e-mail document. The cameras are also very good at automatically focusing and using fill-in flash to get faces just right. If you use a digital camera, it’s not particularly important for our sake to shoot with a large file size (like 3 megapixel or larger), though since you’re going to all this trouble, you may wish to shoot the largest picture possible in case you want to use it for other purposes. 35mm cameras will work just fine as well, including the cheap one-use cameras from the convenience store. If you shoot with one of those, have prints made (preferably 4” x 6”), and send us your favorites through the mail.
Who should be in the shot? Since we’re promoting family farmers, and since farming generally requires work from the whole family, it’s good to get the whole family in the shot if possible. Showing a husband and a wife together (even if one of them works primarily outside the farm) conveys a sense of unity and teamwork. Children represent the future and show the customer just who you are working so hard for, so it’s great to get them in the shot if you can. Even a beloved dog or other animal can sometimes show the viewer a sense of compassion and humanity (of course, often it’s more trouble than it’s worth to get an animal to sit still for a photo).
