Purchasing a new digital camera can seem very overwhelming. Whatever camera you choose, this is going to be the tool that captures all of your moments for the next (ideally) 3-6 years. Having some information under your belt BEFORE you go to purchase your new camera will make the experience far more enjoyable, and you will be sure you have found the right camera for you. This guide is my attempt to break through the intimidating wall of digital photography to make it more manageable to the average consumer.

First things first, before you even consider going to purchase a new camera, start by asking yourself some questions. What do you need your camera to do for you? What will you mainly be taking pictures of? Will you mostly be taking snapshots of your family and friends? If so, then maybe you would benefit greatly from face detection software. Do you like to take scenery, landscape, and still life photos? Are you an action person? Do you have children in sports, or do you often go to events with a lot of action in them? Maybe you would benefit from a camera with a large zoom and a lot of speed. Do you take a lot of pictures at night? Maybe you need good image stabilization to counteract blurry photos.
