Start with your photo in Photoshop.
First step is to convert to grayscale but doing so while the image is still in RGB mode. To do this, you will need to drop the color saturation to zero. To do so, click Ctrl + U. You will then get a prompt.
There will be 3 options from the main prompt. Hue, Saturation and Lightness. Drop the Saturation to -100, which will remove all color from the image but keep the image in RGB mode. Leave Hue and Lightness at the default settings. Now you have a black and white RGB image and you are ready to pull out the blacks.
