ECE594 Final Project
Fall ‘02
Abstract:
We intend to construct hardware to expand the audio output capabilities of Game boy. Our hardware will allow Game boy to play 8-bit digital audio samples through a speaker. The circuit contains two main digital components: (1) A Digital to Analog Converter interfaced as memory-mapped I/O and (2) flash memory that stores our software. Intended only as a test of the expanded hardware capabilities, our software sends 8-bit numerical values describing a sine wave to the DAC.
Introduction:
Our project is inspired by the need for a portable and inexpensive teaching aid for musicians. Game boy represents an ideal platform from which to create such a project. Consider the following facets of a Game boy console as a base from which to build a portable teaching aid:
- low cost: original Game boys can be found at yard sales for $5
- Z80 based CPU running at 4.194304Mhz
- Software development tools are available as freeware
- Portable
- Grey scale reflective LCD display supporting 160×144 pixels and 4 shades of grey
- RAM and ROM support. 8K RAM built-in
-…
