Short Description
In the past, Visual Basic (VB) upgrades were fairly painless and inexpensive because Microsoft made new versions of VB backward compatible, but things are different this time. An upgrade to .NET brings with it a radical shift in terms of architecture, design, deployment, features, and tools. The upgrade will be even more challenging if you decide to move from the forgiving VB compiler to the rigorous C# compiler. Confronted with declining vendor and community support and major migration challenges, BMW Financial Services in Dublin, Ohio set out to define a strategy that would allow us to adopt C# in an efficient and deliberate manner. Our objectives were to minimize disruption and costs and leverage the momentum of the platform change to move our capabilities forward. This article presents our strategy and some of the experiences we are encountering along the way.

IBM TotalStorage DS4000 Storage Considerations for SAS 9 on the IBM eServer p590
Short Description
This storage whitepaper presents the results, and recommendations regarding various SAS 9.1 disk layouts tested at the Beaverton Test Labs. The storage disk layout was modified and monitored in concert with CPU sizing exercises by a combined SAS and IBM SAS International Competency Center (ICC) team. The test environment consisted of SAS 9.1 on the IBM® p590 eServer™ with AIX® 5.3 and the IBM TotalStorage DS4000. Workload for the testing was provided by the SAS Extract Transform Load (ETL) Test Suite. The SAS 9.1 hardware test environment and disk layouts tested during the benchmark are detailed in this document. Relative results of the storage testing are presented in this paper along with recommendations regarding the IBM TotalStorage DS4000 disk layout for SAS 9.1.

Parallel Computing Runtime for Microsoft .NET Framework
Short Description
The .NET Framework offers comprehensive and flexible thread APIs that allow the efficient implementation of multithreaded applications. These APIs can, however, only be utilized within Symmetric Multiprocessors (SMPs), which have a very limited scalability. For larger systems, which are in the PC world mostly represented as clusters of SMPs, other paradigms like message passing or handcrafted hybrid systems have to be used. These approaches are generally more difficult to program and require major code changes compared to sequential codes. This paper presents an extension to the .NET Framework, which implements the concept of automatic dynamic parallelization of programs. The extension provides both ease-of-use and scalability in development of parallel programs. This drastically eases the use of clusters and opens cluster architectures to a whole range of new potential users and applications.
