In the growing world of technology, cellular devices have quickly emerged as one of the fastest evolving fields. They have increased greatly in both popularity and complexity, requiring more advanced operating systems and applications to meet the demands of the con- sumer. Android is a software stack designed to meet these demands in an open source environment. The project is currently being developed and funded by the Open Handset Alliance, which includes companies such as Google and T-Mobile. Android includes an operating system, middleware, and key applications, as well as a Software Development Kit (SDK) for developers to create their own applications for the An- droid environment. Due to its open source license and tools provided, Android is an ideal platform for bringing the mobile market to the educational realm.

The users of today’s operating systems demand high reliability and security. However, faults introduced outside of the core operating system by buggy and malicious device drivers can significantly impact these dependability attributes. To help improve driver isolation, we propose an approach that utilizes the latest hardware virtualization support to efficiently sandbox each device driver in its own minimal Virtual Machine (VM) so that the kernel is protected from faults in these drivers. Hardware virtualization support for Afterburner/L4
Short Description
Full virtualization of the IA32 architecture can be achieved using hardware support. The L4 microkernel has been extended with mechanisms to leverage Intel’s VT-x technology. This work proposes a user level virtual machine monitor that complements L4’s virtualization extensions and realizes microkernel-based full virtualization of arbitrary operating systems. A prototype implementation within the Afterburner framework demonstrates the approach by successfully booting a current Linux kernel.
